The 3 Guard Buzz Cut With or Without a Fade

At roughly three-eighths of an inch, the 3 guard buzz cut keeps visible coverage, with even-length, tapered and faded versions changing the outline.

A 3 guard buzz cut leaves about 3/8 inch, or 10 millimeters, of hair across the head. That length provides scalp coverage while revealing the direction of growth, particularly at the crown, and remains unmistakably a buzz cut.

Also known as a number 3 buzz cut or number 3 haircut, it retains more fullness than a #1 or #2. The hair needs little styling, yet the cut remains distinctly short even as it grows.

For the classic version, a barber passes a #3 guard against the direction of growth for an even finish. The hairline stays natural, with no line-up or fade. The outline is soft, and the length remains consistent from crown to neckline.

At 3/8 inch, medium to thick hair can cover much of the scalp while following the head’s contours. Shorter guards expose more skin and make changes in density easier to see.

3 Guard vs. 2 Guard vs. 4 Guard

GuardLengthLook
#21/4 in. (6 mm)Shorter, with more scalp showing
#33/8 in. (10 mm)Even coverage, with some texture
#41/2 in. (13 mm)Fuller and softer, closer to a short crop

The #2 exposes more scalp; the #4 has the fullness of a close crop. A #3 offers a middle length for someone trying a buzz cut for the first time. The full #0-to-#8 comparison appears in the buzz cut lengths table in our buzz cut guide.

Clipped to #3 throughout, this version needs only a tidy finish around the ears and neckline. Its uniform length also makes it straightforward to maintain with home clippers.

3 Guard Buzz Cut With a Low Fade

Keeping a #3 on top, the low fade begins just above the ears and removes weight near the bottom of the sides. Most of the hair retains its original fullness, with a more defined perimeter.

A mid fade begins around the temples, exposing more of the sides. A taper concentrates the shorter hair at the sideburns and neckline, as with a low taper fade. Other placements appear in the buzz cut fade article.

3 on Top, 2 on the Sides

A #3 on top and #2 at the sides creates a modest difference in length. Some barbers use a #1 at the neckline for a closer finish. The shorter sides make the silhouette appear narrower than a single-guard buzz.

Straight, wavy and coily hair each give the #3 a different surface. Medium to thick hair generally provides fuller scalp coverage, while coily hair retains a visible curl pattern at this length. A line-up is optional; buzz cuts for Black men offer examples of both finishes.

With so little length to disguise the head’s contours, a prominent crown or flat spot can be more noticeable. Leaving extra hair on top or adjusting the sides can change how those areas appear.

On thinning hair, a #3 may make the difference between dense and sparse areas more apparent. A #1 or #2 can create a more consistent appearance. Hairstyles for receding hairlines offer alternatives for different patterns of hair loss.

How a 3 Guard Buzz Cut Grows Out

There is no dramatic grow-out phase. By the third week, the edges lose definition and the hairline appears softer. Around week five, depending on growth rate and texture, the cut can resemble a short crop.

A trim every two to three weeks generally maintains the original length. Faded sides may need attention sooner if the contrast at the perimeter is important.

How to Ask for a 3 Guard Buzz Cut

  • Ask for "a #3 all over" for the classic version.
  • For a fade, say "a #3 on top" and where the fade should start: low, mid or high.
  • Say whether you want a natural hairline or a line-up.
  • At home, use clean, dry hair and clip against the direction of growth, going over each area more than once.
